Official languages: According to the Olympic Charter, the official languages of the Olympic Games are French and English. Therefore, all announcements during and after athletic events must be made in both languages, all signs in the Olympic village must be posted in both languages and so on. However, there have been exceptions to the official language rule. For example, the Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway and Nagano, Japan, and the Summer Games, in Atlanta, United States of America, were opened using only the local language.
