Balcony fall pair were escaping intruder
27th October 2008, 5:07 WST

A woman killed and a man seriously injured in a fall from the balcony of an inner-Sydney unit were trying to escape an armed intruder, police say.

The 18-year-old Chinese woman and 19-year-old Korean man, both studying in Australia, fell from the third floor balcony of a unit on Hunter Street at Waterloo shortly before 2pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

The woman was killed in the fall and the man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with leg and spinal injuries.

The pair were climbing over the balcony to escape a man, armed with a knife, who had forced his way into the unit, police said.

Another woman, 20, from China, was also in the apartment but was uninjured.

The intruder has only been described as male, aged about 30, with a dark complexion.

Detectives are appealing for public help.

Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Hunter Street area on Sunday afternoon is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A KNIFE-wielding bandit who subjected a group of students to an hour-long rape ordeal had gone to a unit to rob them - and escaped with less than $200.

Chinese student Liao "Elva" Wei, 18, died and her boyfriend suffered serious injuries when they fell naked from their third-floor balcony in a desperate bid to escape their attacker, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The man forced four terrified occupants of the Sydney apartment to strip at knifepoint in their living room before holding them for an hour, repeatedly sexually assaulting two of them as the others were forced to watch.

Police believe they are hunting a deviant whose "opportunistic" attempts at robbery led to one of the most sickening home invasions they have encountered.

His main target was Ms Wei, 18, a bubbly and well-liked student whose parents lost their home and all their belongings in the China earthquake earlier this year.

Ms Wei died when she and her Korean boyfriend Tae Wook "Chris" Han, 19, made the decision to flee their captor in Sunday's attack - and instead fell 25m on to concrete outside their Waterloo apartment.

Mr Han, a popular student at the same Waterloo college his girlfriend attended, landed feet-first, shattering his legs, pelvis and suffering spinal injuries.

He has been speaking to detectives between surgeries.

Detectives are treating the crime as opportunistic, as it emerged the man who followed a female visitor into the security unit block held a knife to her throat when the lift reached the victims' floor.

He demanded money and she handed over a small amount she had on her.

"We believe he got away with less than $200," homicide Detective Inspector Russell Oxford said.
